Burma: 18 Human Rights Activists Sentenced to 5 Years of hard Labour and Deported

ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION URGENT APPEAL

Dear Friends,

Greetings! We are informed that the 18 Foreign Human Rights activist were sentenced to 5 years hard labour - for about 3 minutes. Moments after the judge had made his ruling an official of the Ministry of Home Affairs read an order reducing the sentences to deportation. Diplomats were told to meet the 18 on 16 August 1998 at 6.00 am at Rangoon's Mingaladon airport before their departure to Bangkok.
Thanks for all the support you have given to seek the release of the 18 activist.
