During 2006, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has been informed about and acted upon widespread violations of human rights around the Asian region. Issues encountered during the year include endemic torture in Sri Lanka, land-grabbing and evictions in Cambodia, the repression of democratic uprisings and ongoing impunity in Nepal, the serial assassination of activist in the Philippines, mass-disappearances in Pakistan, corruption-fuelled brutality in Bangladesh, unending discrimination in India and the black hole of rights and the rule of law in Burma.
This publication, which also contains reports on Thailand, Indonesia, and the Maldives, presents cases and in-depth analysis concerning the situations in the afore-mentioned eleven Asian nations and AHRC's work throughout the year. For most people living in the region, fear and abuse are a daily reality, with State-institutions frequently at the core of the problem, rather than serving as guardians of citizens' rights. Despite several of the countries in question here being members of the United Nations' top human right body, the Human Rights Council, the enjoyment of human rights remains a distant hope in reality for the majority of persons in Asia. |
