HONG KONG-BASED VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

The AHRC is seeking a number of Hong Kong-based volunteers to assist with IT-related work. Some of the places require special skills, but for others basic computer literacy and interest in human rights is all that is needed.

Students, professionals and anyone with a bit of free time and interest in helping to improve the situation of human rights in Asia are welcome.

You can work at home or in our office, meet new people from all over Asia and the world, and make an important and useful contribution.

Would you like to help? Here's what we are looking for people to do:
  1. Update the contents of a number of websites, and maybe make some small design changes. NO SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED.
  2. Put material from the AHRC websites onto Wikipedia and other free sites globally, make and expand blogs, and build links to our sites. NO SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED.
  3. Help in the development of new web technologies and means of communication for human rights. (Experience in one or more of the following: Python, PHP, Zope, html)
  4. Advance our sites with your JavaScript, Flash, Photoshop skills
We are also prepared to consider volunteers from abroad, if you think that you can handle the work without meeting us in person.

To inquire send an email at support@ahrchk.net or go to
the Contact Us page and in the box marked "Select Department" choose "IT-Volunteering".

Internship

AHRC invites interns from partner organizations in Asia, and these persons are given priority. For these persons, AHRC provides accommodation and support while in Hong Kong. The intern or their organization is expected to pay for the cost of travel to and from Hong Kong. Arrangements for duration of stay are flexible, but usually the period is 6-12 months.

Applications from partner organisations are welcome at any time. Please contact the relevant staff person.

Other interns are also accepted, for a minimum of six months. Interns with a particular research interest are preferred. There are no specific qualifications. Applications are judged on their individual merits and according to the needs of the AHRC at the time. Interns must also be prepared to accept assignments to countries in the region with difficult human rights conditions. The AHRC does not provide any financial support or accommodation for these persons. We also receive many more applications than we can accept.

Please note that all persons coming to AHRC as interns are strictly required to obtain the appropriate Training Visa from the Immigration Department of Hong Kong before arrival. This visa usually takes around three months to obtain.

Applications for the second half of 2008 are closed. Applications for the first half of 2009 are now open. Deadline for submissions: June 30, 2008.

Additionally, AHRC welcomes short-term researchers (for less than one month) any time, at its discretion. Short-term researchers must have a specific research question and intended result from their time in Hong Kong that has been approved in advance by the AHRC and that has a demonstrated connection both to their own area of professional activity or interest and that of the AHRC.
